eSIM and mobile data in Curaçao

Curaçao is not in the EU, so roaming can get expensive. A travel eSIM is the simplest way to have data the moment you land.

Many European travellers are used to using their phone abroad at no extra cost. That does not apply here: Curaçao is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands but is not part of the EU, so EU "roam like at home" rules do not cover it. Unless your provider includes Curaçao in a bundle, data can be pricey. Check your provider's rates before you go, then pick one of the options below.

Option 1: a travel eSIM

An eSIM is a digital SIM you download to your phone. You buy a data package online, install it at home over Wi-Fi, and switch it on when you land. Your normal SIM stays in the phone, so you can still receive calls and texts on your usual number if you want to (check your provider's roaming costs for those).

Airalo sells Curaçao data packages in various sizes and durations. It is a sensible choice for a one- or two-week holiday: no shop visits, no swapping SIM cards, and you can top up in the app.

  • Check compatibility: your phone must support eSIM and be unlocked. Most recent iPhones and many Android phones do.
  • Install before you fly: do it at home over Wi-Fi and keep the eSIM switched off until arrival.
  • Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line once you land, and turn it off for your home SIM to avoid surprise charges.
Tip: eSIM packages are usually data only. For calls, use WhatsApp, FaceTime or other internet calling, which is how most people on the island communicate anyway.

Option 2: a local SIM card

Curaçao has local mobile networks with shops in and around Willemstad. A local prepaid SIM can be good value for longer stays or if you need a local number, for example to call restaurants or a dive school. You will normally need your passport to register, and you have to visit a shop during opening hours, which can eat into your first day.

Option 3: Wi-Fi only

Most hotels, apartments and many cafés and beach bars offer free Wi-Fi. If you are mostly staying put, Wi-Fi plus offline maps can be enough. It gets harder once you are driving: coverage and Wi-Fi are patchier in the far west around Westpunt, exactly where you might need navigation.

Good to know: download an offline map of the whole island in Google Maps or a similar app before you set out. It is small, works without signal and makes finding beach turn-offs in Banda Abou far easier.

Which option is best?

  • One or two weeks, mostly data: a travel eSIM.
  • Long stay or need a local number: a local prepaid SIM.
  • Short stay, rarely leaving the resort: hotel Wi-Fi plus offline maps.

Setting up your data is one of the small jobs that make arrival easier, together with your Digital Immigration Card and your airport transfer. For everything else, see our travel essentials.
