The stretch of coast at Bapor Kibra, roughly 15 minutes from central Willemstad, is the island's most built-up beach area. It is not the place for quiet coves, but if you want a sunbed, a cocktail, shops and an aquarium within one short walk, it is hard to beat.

Mambo Beach and the boulevard

Mambo Beach is a long, man-made beach protected by breakwaters, so the water is usually calm and shallow enough for children. It is divided between several beach clubs that typically charge an entrance fee or minimum spend for loungers and umbrellas; check at the gate. Behind the sand, the Mambo Beach Boulevard is an open-air mall with shops, restaurants and ice-cream stands. Some clubs host parties and live music in the evening, especially at weekends.

Curaçao Sea Aquarium and Dolphin Academy

Next door, the Curaçao Sea Aquarium uses an open seawater system, pumping water straight from the reef into its tanks. Expect reef fish, sharks, turtles, sea lions and feeding sessions. The Dolphin Academy on the same grounds offers dolphin encounters and swims. Captive-dolphin programmes are debated, so read up and decide what suits you. Opening days are limited (it has typically been closed Sundays and Mondays), so check current hours before you go. See aquarium tickets and combos, or compare on Viator.

Tip: Do the aquarium in the morning, then spend the afternoon on the sand next door. You only park once.

Staying here

Several resorts and apartment complexes line this coast, which suits families who want everything on foot: compare hotels near Mambo Beach. Willemstad and Pietermaai are a short taxi ride away, and Jan Thiel is about 10 minutes east.

Is it for you?

Choose Mambo for convenience, facilities and a lively vibe. For snorkelling on a natural reef and fewer people, head west to Cas Abao or Playa Kenepa. Our best beaches guide compares them all.

Nearby on the same coast

A few minutes' drive further east, the coastline continues with smaller beach clubs and resorts towards Jan Thiel. Westwards, towards town, the road passes the Bapor Kibra area and the Seaquarium's own stretch of sand. In the evening, the boulevard restaurants stay open after sunset and there's usually some music, so it works as a casual dinner spot even if you're staying elsewhere. Parking is plentiful but can fill up on weekends and public holidays, when local families come for the day, a fun time to see Curaçao at leisure.

There is some marine life along the breakwaters, but for reef snorkelling the west-coast beaches are much better.
