Curaçao is one of the easiest places in the Caribbean to get underwater. Along most of the calm south and west coast, the reef starts a short swim from the shore and then drops away into a wall. That means you can snorkel straight from the beach, and certified divers can do most dives from shore without a boat. The island's tourist board counts more than 70 dive sites, and the water is warm all year.
Parts of the coast, including the stretch east of Willemstad around Caracasbaai, are protected as marine park, and good reef runs almost the full length of the leeward coast. Here is where we would go, and how to do it well.
The best snorkelling spots
Tugboat, Caracasbaai
The classic first snorkel. A small tugboat lies upright in about five metres of water, covered in coral and sponges and surrounded by fish. You can see the whole wreck from the surface. It sits close to the shore at Tugboat Beach, so go early before the boat tours arrive. More on our Tugboat page.
Playa Piskado, Westpunt
Green turtles graze here every day, attracted by the fishermen cleaning their catch. You will usually see them within minutes in shallow water at Playa Piskado. Keep at least a couple of metres away, never touch or chase them, and watch out for boats near the pier.
Playa Lagun and Cas Abao
The narrow cove of Playa Lagun is calm and sheltered, with rocks full of life on both sides; turtles are regular visitors too. Cas Abao has gear rental, showers and a reef that starts at the edge of the swimming area, which makes it ideal for families and nervous snorkellers.
The Blue Room
A low sea cave near Santa Cruz where sunlight filtering in under water turns everything electric blue. It is usually reached by boat; the effect is strongest around the middle of the day. See our Blue Room guide and compare snorkel trips on GetYourGuide, or compare on Viator.
Diving in Curaçao: where to start
If you have never dived, a "discover scuba" try-dive or an entry-level course with a local dive school is easy to arrange; most resorts have a dive shop nearby. Certified divers can rent a tank, load the car and head off to shore dives on their own or with a buddy.
- Tugboat (beginner): shallow, sheltered and full of life, and an excellent first wreck. The reef wall next to it (Director's Bay) is worth exploring too.
- Playa Kalki / Alice in Wonderland (beginner to intermediate): a gently sloping reef near Westpunt with easy shore entry.
- Porto Mari (beginner to intermediate): a managed beach with a well-known double reef.
- Mushroom Forest (intermediate): mushroom-shaped star coral formations on the northwest coast, boat access only, often combined with the Blue Room.
- Superior Producer (advanced): an upright cargo ship wreck around 30 metres deep near Willemstad's harbour entrance; dive it with an experienced guide.
- Watamula (advanced): a pristine reef off the northwestern tip, often with current; a boat dive for experienced divers.
Conditions are good most of the year. Mornings tend to be calmest and clearest, before the trade wind picks up and the beaches fill. After heavy rain, which is most likely from roughly October to December, visibility near the shore can drop for a day or two, so pick a spot further from run-off or head out by boat.
Safety and reef etiquette
- Stay on the leeward side. The north coast has big swells and strong currents; never snorkel or dive there without a professional.
- Look up. Boats use some bays. Snorkel within sight of the shore and consider a brightly coloured swim buoy.
- Hands off. Don't stand on, touch or kick the coral, and don't feed fish or turtles.
- Sun. Wear a rash vest; you burn quickly with your back to the sun. Choose a mineral, reef-friendly sunscreen.
- Valuables. Leave nothing in the car at shore-dive spots; take only the key into the water in a secure pocket.
- Flying after diving. Follow your agency's no-fly guidelines and plan your last dive at least a day before your flight home.

Frequently asked questions
Can you snorkel from the beach in Curaçao?
Yes. On most south and west coast beaches the reef starts a short swim from shore. The Tugboat, Playa Piskado, Playa Lagun and Cas Abao are easy starting points.
Where can you swim with turtles in Curaçao?
Playa Piskado (Playa Grandi) at Westpunt is the most reliable spot. Turtles are also often seen at Playa Lagun and around Klein Curaçao. Watch them without touching or feeding.
Is Curaçao good for beginner divers?
Very. Many sites are shallow and reachable from shore, conditions on the leeward side are usually calm, and plenty of dive schools offer try-dives and entry-level courses.
