Banda Abou is the name locals use for the western half of the island: dry hills, cactus, small villages and some of the most beautiful coves in the Caribbean. Life is slower here, and many visitors say this is where Curaçao felt most like itself. The village of Lagun sits at its heart.

Playa Lagun and neighbouring coves

Playa Lagun is a narrow inlet between steep rocks, with fishing boats pulled up on the sand and calm, clear water. Snorkel along the sides and you have a fair chance of seeing turtles. A few minutes away, Playa Kenepa (Grote Knip and Kleine Knip) is the island's postcard beach, while Playa Jeremi is a quieter public bay with deeper water close to shore. Facilities are basic: a snack bar or a few shade huts at most.

Tip: Bring reef shoes, a mask and your own shade. Rocky entries are common, and shade disappears fast on weekends.

Landhuis Knip and Museum Tula

On the road between Lagun and Kenepa stands Landhuis Knip, the plantation house where Tula led the slave revolt of 17 August 1795. Today it houses Museum Tula, telling the story of the uprising and of life on the plantations. It's a short, moving visit that adds context to the beaches. Check opening hours before you go.

Getting here and staying

Public buses run west but infrequently, so a car is the practical way to explore: compare rental cars. If you don't drive, a day tour can combine several coves and a snorkel stop: see west-coast beach tours. Staying in the west means a handful of small resorts, guesthouses and dive lodges, with very dark night skies: compare places near Lagun.

Respect the coves

  • Don't touch or feed turtles; give them space.
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen and don't stand on coral.
  • Take your rubbish with you; bins are few.

From here, Westpunt is 10 minutes north.

A day out west

Combine Lagun with a few other stops: start with the morning light at Kenepa, snorkel at Lagun before noon, visit Museum Tula after lunch, and finish with sunset at Westpunt. Small roadside snack bars sell local dishes and cold drinks, but options thin out after dark, so plan dinner. Fuel stations are fewer than around Willemstad. If you're curious about local life, look out for village festivals and Sunday gatherings at the beaches, when families from all over Banda Abou come together with music and food.
