The Blue Room is a partly submerged cave in the limestone cliffs of the west coast, a little south of Playa Santa Cruz. From the outside you see almost nothing: just a low gap where the rock meets the sea. Duck under it and you come up inside a chamber where the light, entering only through the underwater opening, makes the water glow an unreal shade of blue. Bring a mask, because the effect is even stronger below the surface.
How to get there
- Boat from Santa Cruz: local water taxis leave from Playa Santa Cruz for a short ride to the cave and wait while you swim in. The simplest option.
- Boat tours: catamaran and speedboat trips along the west coast, some leaving from the Willemstad and Caracasbaai area, often include the Blue Room with other snorkel stops. Compare them on GetYourGuide or Viator.
- On foot: from Playa Santa Cruz a rough trail leads past the black-sand cove of Santu Pretu to the cliffs above the cave, roughly 20–30 minutes. You then climb down the rocks and enter from the water. Only for confident swimmers in calm conditions, never alone.
When to go
The blue is brightest when the sun is high, roughly late morning to early afternoon; early in the day the cave is dim. Entry depends on the sea: when there is swell, the gap can be dangerous and boat operators will skip it. Wear a snorkel mask and fins if you have them, and reef shoes for the rocks.
Combine it with
Playa Santa Cruz has a beach bar and is a pleasant place to wait for the boat. From there it is a short drive north to Playa Piskado for turtles or south to Playa Lagun.
