Cas Abao is the beach to choose when you want the full Caribbean picture without having to think about it. It is a private beach on the west coast, about 35 minutes' drive from Willemstad past Sint Willibrordus, with fine white sand, palms and clear turquoise water, and everything a lazy day needs within a few steps.

Facilities

Because it is privately run, you pay an entrance fee, and in return the beach is clean and well looked after. Fees and lounger prices change, so check the beach's own website before you go.

  • Comfort: loungers, umbrellas and palapas to rent, showers and toilets.
  • Food and drink: a restaurant and beach bar.
  • Water sports: a dive shop with snorkel rental, guided dives and courses.

Snorkelling

The reef starts just off the beach. The best snorkelling is usually along the right-hand side (facing the sea), where the bottom drops off and coral, reef fish and the occasional turtle appear. The entry is sandy, which makes it a good beach for first-time snorkellers and children.

Tip: Weekends, especially Sundays, are busy with local families. Arrive by mid-morning for a lounger in the front row, or come on a weekday.

On the way

The road to Cas Abao passes the salt pans where you can often see the flamingos of Jan Kok, so pause there on the drive in. The scenic coastal road continues north to Playa Lagun and the beaches of Westpunt; more ideas are in Sint Willibrordus. A car is the easiest way to get here: compare hire on DiscoverCars. Snorkel tours also stop along this stretch of coast; see GetYourGuide.
