On Monday 17 August 1795, the enslaved workers of the Knip plantation (also called Kenepa) refused to go to work. Led by a man named Tula, they demanded their freedom, and the protest grew into the largest slave revolt in Curaçao's history, spreading to plantations across the west of the island. After weeks of fighting the revolt was crushed; Tula was betrayed, captured and executed on 3 October 1795. Slavery was not abolished on Curaçao until 1863.
Today 17 August is commemorated on the island as the Day of the Struggle for Freedom, and the white plantation house of Landhuis Knip, where it all began, is home to Museo Tula.
The museum
The museum is run by the Fundashon Museo Tula, which reopened it with a new permanent exhibition after a closure of several years. It tells Tula's story and that of his fellow rebels, puts the revolt in the context of the Atlantic world of the French and Haitian revolutions, and looks at plantation life, resistance and the role of women in the struggle. A monument to Tula stands near the house.

Getting there
Landhuis Knip lies on the road to Westpunt, about 45 minutes' drive from Willemstad, right by the turn-off to the Knip beaches. That makes it easy to combine with a swim at Playa Kenepa or an early hike in Christoffel National Park. A car is the practical option; compare on DiscoverCars.
